Dr. Antonis Ioannou

Dr. Antonis Ioannou is a cardiologist with extensive clinical and research experience. He graduated from the University of Crete Medical School (2009), then completed postgraduate studies (MSc 2010) and a doctorate (PhD 2014) at the same institution, conducting the experimental part at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, focusing on the effect of complement on ischemia-reperfusion injury.

After three years of postdoctoral research at Harvard (2010-2013), he completed his residency in Internal Medicine (2014-2016) and his residency in Cardiology at Nicosia General Hospital and Limassol General Hospital (2016-2020). Since 2021, he has maintained a private practice at the Nicosia Cardiology Center.

His research work includes publications in journals such as the Hellenic Journal of Cardiology, American Journal of Physiology, and PLoS One, with an emphasis on the role of platelets and complement in inflammation and remote ischemia-reperfusion injury. His results have been presented at international conferences: Annual Meeting of the American Association of Immunologists (Boston 2012), European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (Vienna 2010, Barcelona 2008), and World Congress on Brain Injury (Lisbon 2008).

He has been honored with IKY Greece scholarships for the highest performance in the first two years of medical studies (2004, 2005) and a LCCI Accounting Higher Gold Medal (1997), while also being a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology. He is fluent in Greek and English and is particularly interested in the prevention of cardiovascular events as well as the effects of obesity on cardiovascular diseases.
